The Bates Briefing Strategic AI intelligence for pharma leaders
What this is
The Bates Briefing is an annual corporate subscription delivering strategic AI intelligence to pharma leadership. Written by Dr. Andrée Bates, founder of Eularis, who has built AI for pharma clients over 20 years since 2003 and has personally directed strategic AI engagements at most major pharma companies.
The Briefing exists to answer the question every pharma board and executive team is now asking: where should we be investing in AI, where shouldn’t we be, how do we know and what has changed that we need to know?
It combines over 20 years of evidence on what actually works in pharma AI with weekly analysis of what’s changing in the market – written specifically for biopharma executives who need to make capital allocation, vendor selection, and strategic positioning decisions on AI. It also highlights areas that appear not to be recognised by pharma boards yet e.g. why the billions being spent on AI in drug discovery are failing to yield strong results and what needs to change for these programs to yield more impressive results.
Why the briefing exists
Vendor-neutral strategic AI intelligence is structurally rare in pharma.
Pharma is investing heavily in AI, with the majority of capital flowing into drug discovery. Eli Lilly’s Chief Information and Digital Officer Diogo Rau told the Wall Street Journal that AI benefits in drug discovery haven’t materialised meaningfully – the real value to date has come from manufacturing and back-office work. Companies like Recursion Pharmaceuticals have not brought a single AI-developed drug to market in 13 years since founding. MIT’s NANDA initiative report ‘The GenAI Divide: State of AI in Business 2025’ found that 95% of enterprise generative AI pilots fail to deliver measurable P&L impact.
Pharma executives reading the trade press are not getting the strategic clarity they need. Consultancies offering AI strategy are conflicted by their own AI products (McKinsey/QuantumBlack, ZS/ZAIDYN, IQVIA’s proprietary platforms, Accenture’s vendor partnerships). Vendors offering analysis are selling solutions. The pharma AI boutiques offering counsel are often selling their own builds.
The Bates Briefing is the only weekly strategic AI intelligence service written specifically for pharma leadership by an analyst with no AI products to sell, no vendor partnerships, and over 20 years of accumulated evidence on what delivers ROI in pharma AI.
